Does your morning routine lack organization? Are you frequently running out the door with seconds to spare before being late to wherever you’re going? Do your kids forget things that you have to return home for to bring to them? If you do, there are some adjustments you can make to change the course of your day.
Here are four ways to make your mornings go smoother with kids.
Make breakfast in advance.
There are many foods you can make in advance to eat in the morning. Try refrigerator oats with jam or fresh fruit toppings, fruit and yogurt parfaits, hardboiled eggs, mini quiches, breakfast burritos, and homemade trail mix. For foods that are eaten hot, make large batches in advance, freeze them, and use the microwave to heat them up before serving them.
Enforce a no electronics rule in the AM.
Keep electronic devices in a locked box until all morning activities have been completed. This is especially effective during the weekend when school isn’t in session. You’ll have fewer problems getting your kids to move quickly when they don’t have a phone or gaming system in their hands distracting them.
Spend a few minutes each evening checking over homework and signing paperwork.
Before your kids go to bed at night, ask them to bring you their Binderbags and check for any homework that is due and permission slips or notes from the teacher that need to be read and signed. Complete this task before going to sleep yourself so you don’t forget to do it in the morning. It’s one less thing you’ll need to worry about while running out the door for school and work.
Choose outfits for the week on Sunday.
Hang them in the order that your kids would wear them. You can also use different colors of hangers to signify the different days of the week. Keep gallon-sized storage bags on each hanger for undergarments and socks. That way, you’ll know if you need to do laundry in the middle of the week to keep everyone in clothes.
